PAISBOA Board & Structure

The PAISBOA Board is comprised of 18-20 Business Officers representative of the association membership. Board members typically serve two three-year terms. The Board includes an Executive Committee and officers of the four Consortia. Each Consortium is governed by a committee comprised of officers and members-at-large. Business officers are encouraged to serve on committees to lend their expertise and guidance.

2016-2017 Board Members

 
Frank Aloise

After graduating from Hobart College, Frank Aloise worked with a private partnership trading options, which ultimately led him to working in Switzerland and Germany. Frank returned to the States and moved to Philadelphia, where he renovated row homes to rent or sell. Frank then combined his knowledge of real estate, construction and the world of finance to establish a career that would contribute to society.

He started his work with Independent Schools in 1997 at The Haverford School, and has been with Springside School since 2000. Since September 2010 Frank has been the CFO for the newly formed Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Frank has been involved with Philadelphia Area Independent School Business Officers Association (PAISBOA) since 1997 and currently sits on the PAISBOA board. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the board of the National Business Officers Association. He is currently Chair of the Direct Client Advisory Council for TIAA-Cref, representing over 12,000 independent schools, associations and small colleges.

Larry Capuzzi
 
Larry Capuzzi has been with Episcopal Academy since 2008, serving first as Controller before moving to his current role as Business Manager in 2013. Before coming to Episcopal, he was the managing partner of a small options trading company and has previously worked in various corporate accounting/finance roles with both Computer Science Corp and Citibank. He has a B.S. in Accounting from Villanova University.
 
 
Lisa Carbone Warren, Treasurer
 
Gail Crane

Gail Crane has worked for over 20 years in small independent schools.  For the last seven years, she has been the Assistant Head for Finance and Operations for The Quaker School at Horsham, a Quaker school for children with learning disabilities.  She has a BA from Temple University and a MS from Saint Joseph’s University in Human Resource Management.  Gail is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).   She serves on the advisory board for St. Joseph’s Human Capital Management graduate program.

Gail is on the board of The Career Wardrobe, a nonprofit which provides professional clothing and education programs for women in transition trying to find gainful employment.   She is also an Executive Service Corps volunteer with the Nonprofit Center of LaSalle University.

Hal Davidow, Chair

Hal Davidow began working at the William Penn Charter School in 1996, serving as the Chief Financial Officer and teacher of Economics in the Social Studies Department. He serves as Chair of the PAISBOA Board and helped found the Purchasing Consortium. Hal also serves as the treasurer of the board of KenCrest Centers, a social service agency that serves children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Prior to entering the Independent School world, Hal retired from a 22 year career at SEPTA, holding several positions including the Assistant General Manager for Subway Elevated Operations and finally as the Assistant General Manager for Finance and Planning. Hal has a BS from Drexel University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
 

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 
Tom Devine, Recording Secretary 
 
Tom has served as Business Manager at Merion Mercy Academy since 2011. His past experiences includes a variety of financial, safety and operations positions in the trucking business for Matlack and Rollins Environmental Services. He then served as Controller in the data communications business for Data Voice Networks, Inc.

Tom earned his BA degree from St. Joseph’s University and MBA from Louisiana State University. He currently serves on the PAISBOA Data Survey Committee.
 
 
Steve Feld

Prior to joining Solebury School as the Director of Finance, Steve served as Chief Financial Officer at two small liberal arts colleges after working for a decade at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. Prior to the University of Maryland, Steve was a member of the Higher Education Management program faculty at Penn’s Graduate School of Education and a Dean in Penn’s College House program. He started his professional career as an engineer and went on to start three companies. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Mexico, an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and an EdD in Higher Education Management from Penn’s Graduate School of Education. In addition to serving on the PAISBOA board, Steve is on the board of the Student Federal Credit Union at the University of Pennsylvania and PAISBIG.

Mark Gibbons, Vice-Chair

Mark Gibbons has worked at LaSalle College High School since 1997, and has served as the CFO for seven years. He has served on the PAISBOA Board for 5 years as the Chair for Business Services. He also serves as the Board President of KenCrest Services, a Board member of the Central Bucks Family YMCA, and a Board member of the Pennsylvania Barge Club. Mark attended Fordham University.

 
 
Cheryl Hammond Hopewell, Membership Chair 
 
Cheryl Hammond Hopewell has been the director of Finance and Operations at Friends School Haverford since 2002. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, majoring in Accounting and Operations Management and a Master of Business Administration in Finance. She is married to Irvin Hopewell and they reside in Havertown, PA. They have a Son and Daughter-in-law, Kyle and Robbyn Hopewell, who reside in Tampa, FL. Cheryl is an active member of her church where she holds offices and serves on boards at different levels. Her hobbies include running and traveling.
  Carolyn Hapeman

Carolyn Hapeman is a native of Lancaster, PA and a CPA with both public (11 years) and private (10 years) accounting experience. Her public accounting experience was in Madison, WI. Her private accounting experience, on the other hand, was mostly in Los Angeles and included work as the Controller for Sungard Avantgard, a Fortune 500 company. From 2008 to 2013, she served as the Chief Financial Officer for New Community Jewish High School in West Hills, CA, and was an active member of Cal-ISBOA. Carolyn now serves as Chief Financial Officer at Westtown School.
 

Mark Murray, Business Insurance Chair

Mark Murray is the Director of Finance and Operations at the Montgomery School, a Pre-K-8 independent day school. Prior to working at the Montgomery School, Mark had been the DFO of the Wilmington Montessori School. Mark has had an extensive career in business and finance, is a CPA and received his MBA from Drexel University. This is his first year serving on the PAISBOA Board. In addition to being involved with PAISBOA, Mark has served and supported a number of not for profit organizations.


Rose Neubert

Previous to joining Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Rose Neubert was a CPA in public accounting for the firm KPMG. The skills developed during that time led her to the business manager position at Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart.

While taking some time off to raise our young family, she served as a founding trustee of the newly incorporated Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart. As the School grew in size and complexity, the volunteer role evolved into that of full time business officer.

Roles in other associations in which she has been involved include: A NJ Delegate to the NBOA Conference on the Business Office, a Strategic Planning Committee Member of Network of Sacred Heart Schools, an Accreditation Team Member of NJAIS, and a Finance Council Member of St. Alphonsus RC Church.

 
Richard Ollinger
 
Dick Ollinger has served as the President/CEO of Cornerstone Christian Academy since 2002. He has been active in PAISBOA since 2004 and currently serves on the Purchasing Consortium. For 25 years prior to coming to Cornerstone, Dick was an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) serving as the Associate Pastor for Youth and Education at The Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, Orchard Park, NY; as Senior Pastor/Head of Staff of Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, Monroeville, PA; and Senior Pastor/Head of Staff of the Venice Presbyterian Church, Venice, FL. He holds degrees from Westminster College (PA) and Union Theological Seminary (VA). Dick and his wife Nancy, who works at Cabrini College, are parents to four children.
 
 
 
Alan Stifelman

After graduating from Rutgers, Alan spent a good part of his career in public accounting and as a corporate controller. In 1992, the opportunity arose to move into the world of Independent Schools at Buckingham Friends School. Seventeen happy years later, Alan was considering retirement until an irresistible position opened up at Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, where Alan is now in his fifth year as Business Manager. During these years Alan has been active in PAISBOA and NBOA, and is now also participating in NJAIS.
 
 
Tom Taft
 
Tom Taft graduated from Yale in 1971 and moved to Santa Barbara to train for the Decathlon. Later he started a small residential construction company named Kacion Construction (its motto, although never advertised, was ”Kacion Construction – there is no corner we will not cut”). He worked as an investment banker at First Interstate Bank, taught English, Math, Mime and Phys Ed to Middle Schoolers for 7 years, and help found the Anacapa School in Santa Barbara. He has an MBA from Yale and has served as Germantown Academy’s Chief Operating Officer for 24 years. He enjoys rock and roll and has put off any move to adulthood, but is now recognizing that it may prove eventually inevitable.
 

Adam Wojtelwicz

Since 2008, Adam has been the Chief Financial Officer for The Shipley School, a PK-12 independent day school with an enrollment of over 800 students.  Adam has been working in the non-profit sector his entire career. Formerly, he was the CFO for Foundations, Inc. a non-profit committed to improving educational experiences for children. For eight years, he was also the Director of Finance for Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware which is an independent, college-prep day school for high school aged students. Prior to this, Adam was the Financial Planning Manager for the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for six years where he managed the capital projects budget as well as financial forecasting models. Adam holds an M.B.A. with a concentration in Management from Eastern University and a B.A.  in Business Management from Kentucky Wesleyan College. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Area Independent Schools Business Officers Association.

David Gold, Secretary

David Gold is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University. He came to The Haverford School in 2002 from Federation Day Care Services, where he was Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. He has more than 29 years business experience including Chief Financial Officer of the Philadelphia Education Fund; Finance Director of Paths/Prism: The Philadelphia Partnership for Education; Controller of The Foundation For Architecture, and Audit Senior in the Closely Held Division of Arthur Andersen & Co. He has also held diverse consulting positions.


 
Nadia Murray, Treasurer

Nadia is the Business Manager at Stratford Friends School, an independent school specializing in educating children who learn differently.

Shortly after starting her position as Business Manager, she became involved in PAISBOA. She has served as a committee member, Assistant Treasurer, and Treasurer. Nadia has served on the trustee board at National Black MBA Association (Philadelphia Chapter) since 2010. For two years, she served as the Special Events Chair. She currently is the Vice President of Operations of National Black MBA Association.

Nadia holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Swarthmore College and Master of Business Administration degree from West Chester University. A native of Brooklyn, New York but has resided in the Delaware Valley after graduation. She enjoys traveling, relaxing and reading.
 
 
 
Don Silverson, Vice Chair

 
Joseph VanBernum, Chair

Joe is the Business Manager and CFO of Overbrook School for the Blind, and has worked there since 1988. He has his MBA from Temple University Bachelors’ degree from St. Joseph’s University. In addition to serving on the PAISBOA Services Corporation, he has served as Treasurer of Overbrook Friedlander Programs and Board Member of Riverton, NJ Board of Education.

Joan Barone, Treasurer

Joan has been with Waldron Mercy Academy for over ten years and currently serves as Director of Finance and Operations, as well as Treasurer of the corporation.  In addition, she manages the school’s tuition assistance program and chairs the financial aid committee. 

Previous experience includes ten years as an investment banking analyst and stock broker in various Philadelphia regional brokerage firms, and ten years in commercial banking. Joan earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and an MBA from Drexel University.
 
 
 
Heather Gelting
 
Heather Gelting is the Human Resource Director for The Hill School in Pottstown. Prior to joining The Hill School in January 2013, her experiences included HR Consulting, Director of Human Resources for YUM Brands, and VP of Human Resources and Administration for Bursich Associates. Heather is an adjunct faculty member with Villanova University and teaches The SHRM Learning System course each Spring and Fall semester with the College of Continuing Studies. She is a SHRM Certified Senior Certified Professional and an HRCI Certified Senior Professional in Human Resource Management.
 
Heather received her Master’s in Human Resource Management from Penn State’s Great Valley Campus. Heather also serves on the Advisory Committee for the Olivet Boys and Girls Club and volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
 
 
 
Carol Lerner, Recording Secretary

Since 2008, Carol has been Director of Finance and Operations at The Philadelphia School, a progressive independent school for preschool – eighth grade. Prior to joining The Philadelphia School, Carol was Director of Finance at Resources for Human Development. Carol held several finance, accounting, and controller jobs over 21 years at CIGNA Insurance Company in Philadelphia, London and Latin America.
 
Carol is Vice President and Treasurer of the Board of the Parent Infant Center, a nonprofit child care center; and has been on the PAISBOA Board of Directors since 2010. Carol holds an M.B.A with a concentration in accounting and a B.A in Business Administration from Temple University.
 
 
 
 
Bob Mueller, Chair

Bob Mueller has been CFO at Delaware Valley Friends School since 1991 and has built DVFS into an energy-efficient, high-tech physical plant.  Bob was founding Chair of PAISBOA for fourteen years, continues as Chair of PAISIG, and received the inaugural PAISBOA Visionary Award in 2011. Nationally, Bob is an ABOIS member, a former VP of NBOA, and the 2006 Kenneth A. White, Jr. Distinguished Business Officer Award recipient. 

Bob organized PAISBOA's 2005 "High Performance Schools" conference and has spoken on how to "Create a 21st Century School Building" at the 2011 NBOA Symposium, and with Frank Aloise, at the 2012 NAIS/NBOA Town Hall.
 
 
Martha Scache, Chair

Martha Scache is the Business Manager at Abington Friends School and has served on the PAISBOA Board for 4 years. She serves on both the Business Services Group and Health Insurance Group.

Martha has been with Abington Friends School for 16 years. She started as the transportation manager, and then moved to accounts payable. After obtaining her MBA, she moved into the payroll/HR/Benefits role, and about 3 years ago, became Business Manager.
